IBM® ELM 7.0 Is Here. Can Your Software Engineering Operations Benefit?

It took a bit longer than originally intended, but after a successful beta program with clients and partners, IBM Engineering has finally launched version 7.0 of its Enterprise Lifecycle Management (ELM) solution. This from Dibbe Edwards, IBM’s vice president of ELM Offerings IBM Watson IoT, who announced the official 7.0 release in a March 16 blog post:

“ELM 7.0 integrates and enhances your product development process by offering OLSC, SAFe 4.6, and Agile interoperability. ELM 7.0 continues to use AI to augment your system requirements quality while improving user experience with the addition of built-in templates to help you achieve compliance standards, like ASPICE for automotive.

The introduction of ELM 7.0 ensures our customers are equipped with the tools they need to develop tomorrow’s products in a smarter, safer and more cost-effective way. These enhancements help companies (and their software engineering groups) manage the growing complexity of product engineering with the speed necessary to deliver faster business outcomes.

We’re bringing AI into the development process to help you uncover valuable, real-time insights across your engineering data. Detect errors earlier in the product lifecycle, before products hit the market. Before the risk is too great.”

As we’ve been saying since ELM 7.0 first hit the drawing board, Kudos to IBM for making ELM better with version 7.0 — and for its ongoing mission to improve how software engineering and product development projects are managed. Since transitioning (and renaming) ELM from its CE/CLM predecessor, IBM has hyped ELM’s enhanced tool sets for Requirements, Systems Design, Test Management, and Workflow Management, and version 7.0 takes this all a step further.

Enhanced user experience for software engineering groups

As Dibbe Edwards put it, especially with its increased use of AI, ELM 7.0 has been upgraded to augment system requirements quality. At the same time, the tools and Agile interoperability in version 7.0 have been refined to enhance the user experience for software engineering groups, product development groups, and any other users involved in the development process. IBM has taken great care to make sure ELM 7.0 provides greater insights into the engineering data and processes these groups need, in turn improving requirements management, authoring, modeling, testing, compliance and so on.

Changing environment for product development

IBM has long understood the dynamics of product development. But they’ve also realized that digital products and technologies like IoT and AI have changed the environment for the software engineering and product engineering efforts that produce new products. The same can be said for change-drivers like industry standards for safety-critical systems; the quantity and difficulty of requirements; the structure and size of architectures; the number and depth of tests; and exponentially growing lines of code, especially in connected digital products.

Should ELM 7.0 be in your future? A checklist to help you decide

It’s an intriguing question. And as it is with any tool set for software engineering and product development, the first question for IBM ELM 7.0 is, “Do we need it?” A second question, naturally, is this one. “How would 7.0 benefit us?”

To help you make an assessment, we’ve developed a checklist in line with ELM’s Requirements, Systems Design, Test Management, and Workflow Management capabilities. The checklist is the brainchild of two IBM experts who recently brought their industry expertise to ClearObject.

Ron Felice was a solution architect at IBM, where he worked for 14 years, and Jason Epstein is a 20-year IT industry veteran who has specialized in the Rational tool suite for the past 17 years. Ron is now a product owner in ClearObject’s Engineering Product Development R&D group and Jason is a systems engineer for our Managed Services operations.
